Pádraig Standún

Pádraig Standún was born in Ballydavock, Co. Mayo, in 1946 and was ordained at Maynooth. A well-known writer, activist and priest, he is best known for his novels, Súil le Breith (1983), which he translated as Lovers (1983), Cion Mná (1993) – a novel of lesbian love, translated by himself as A Woman’s Love (1994) – Stigmata (1995) and Saoire (1997). Taibhdhearc na Gaillimhe produced a stage version of Stigmata in 1996. Bob Quinn based his film, Budawanny (1987) on the novel Súil le BreithDíbirt Dé (2007) is his latest novel. Standún spent time as a priest in Carraroe and the Aran Islands and in Tourmakeady, Co. Mayo. He worked for fifty years as a Roman Catholic Priest in the Irish (Gaelic) speaking areas of Mayo and Galway until retirement in 2021. He still helps out in local parishes. Writing was always a hobby, He has fifteen novels published in Irish as well as novels in English, German, Polish, Romanian, Bulgarian and Albanian. He contributes a weekly article to “The Connaught Telegraph” in Mayo. Since retirement, he is slowly spreading his literary wings into other pastures and is delighted that his novel “Stop The Tsunami” is being published by Gotham Press in Wyoming, USA.
